American elementary schools and Japanese elementary schools have many differences. First, in the two American schools I visited, classes have 20 ~ 25 students. In Japan, classes have 30 ~ 40 students. Therefore there are fewer studentsin class, American students can talk to teachers more often than in Japan. Next, in Japan, there are desks and chairs lined up like clockwork, and students always face the teacher and the teacheris the center of the class. In America, there are different arrangements and set ups. There are sometimes one big table and some chairs around the table, or there are some desks and chairs freely around the room, and students are the center of the class. Finally, in Japan, students eat the school lunch prepared at school. Students who wear white smocks and masks distribute lunch for other students, but in America, students can bring their own lunch, or they can eat the school lunch. The chool lunch is distributed by dinner ladies who were paied staffs. To me, the many differences between American elementary schools and Japanese elementary schools are interesting.
