Greeeeen Day!!!

American events are more magnificent than events in Japan. Recently, I experienced one big event and I thought it was fun so I will tell you about it.

Green friends
I saw a strange sight during my Seattle trip two weeks ago. I really enjoyed the trip, but everywhere I went I always saw people wearing something green. I felt the town turned into green. I noticed a lot of people wearing green; I was really surprised. Many people wore green T-shirts, green necklaces, had  green nails, green hats, and even shop clerks were wearing green uniforms or normal uniforms with green earrings. The day was March 17th and it was St. Patrick's Day. I heard my RA talking about that before. I wore green clothes on that day because I wanted to join the event, but I didn't think St. Patrick's Day was such a big festival.

I was fascinated and enjoyed this event. I wondered about it and I researched it because most Japanese don't know about this event.  St. Patrick's Day is the day when Saint Patrick died. He spread the religion of Christ in Ireland. The reason why people wear green is related to Ireland's country flower which looks like a clover. The color of a clover is green so people wear green items. If you don't wear green item on the day, you will be pinched by someone. I think many Japanese people don't celebrate the special day like that. I thought it was a very marvelous experience for me.

As I said before, American people enjoy celebrating many events. It's a good and traditional custom. I think it expresses Americans' active characteristic. I think the way people celebrate special days is a big cultural difference. Each area has a lot of customs, but the events are celebrated differently. I thought it's an important experience for me to think about culture. I want to tell my Japanese friends and family about St. Patrick's Day. I think these events are a good way to learn each culture.

Hi, Yuriko!!
I'm totally agree with you. In Japan, many people don't have any religion, so there are no celebrations like this. However, I wondered the origin of this event is not America. This event is from another country. I was surprised.
